Gold's Gym Pasadena (Marley Station) and Glen Burnie
Gold's has two gyms in the Glen Burnie/Pasadena area, one in Pasadena at Marley Station Mall and another in Glen Burnie on Ritchie Highway (Route 2) past 695.
Neither of these clubs are your father's Gold's Gym with rusty steel plates with guys on steroids lifting 150 lbs dumbbells where the members are 99% male. Both of these Gold's Gyms are nice gyms in quality facilities (although the Glen Burnie Gold's is in an area where you would rather not be hanging out after dark) where you can get a good workout. Because you are reading this review of Gold's Gym on a competitor's website, you have to expect we will also point out the downsides. It is coming, we promise. But it is worth pointing out these are quality clubs and if you join either one, we doubt you will regret it.
But, yes, there are downsides. First, look at price. The advertised price and the actual price often differ because of the details that are left out with respect to length of the contract and the amount of the initiation fee. The initiation fee is a big deal for many people because they resent having to pay money up front for services that have not been performed. But this has been the health club model for years and Gold's is a rather stereotypical health club.
Which is a good segue into the second problem with Gold's Gym in Pasadena and Glen Burnie : these are classic “see and be seen” health clubs with a lot of guys flexing and a lot of girls putting on makeup to go workout. So there is a certain level of competitive stress in the environment. Moreover, the Gold's Gym name still in Maryland, as it does in the rest of the country, still has certain connotations that attract the musclehead genre of exercisers.
It is ironic then that Gold's Gym – particularly in Pasadena at Marley Station – does not provide the equipment to meet the needs of a serious weightlifter. The clubs do not have heavy dumbbells or the HammerStrength equipment necessary to get in a complete strength workout.
There is also the factor element to these clubs: their members are not reporting (at least back to us) that there is much feeling of community in these health clubs. This is not really a knock on Gold's Gym as much as a knock on this whole type of health club – Gold's, Bally's, Planet Fitness, etc. – everyone is a number not a name.
Finally, Gold's Gym in Glen Burnie or Pasadena Maryland do not provide the facilities to do much beyond your basic workout. So if you are looking for a complete boxing or mixed martial arts workout, you are not going to have the resources you need at your disposal.
